I first read It Ends With Us in January 2022. It was one of the books that got me out of my reading slump. When news of the movie adaptation first broke, I had my doubts, especially when photos from the set came out. IEWU is one of my all-time favorites from Colleen Hoover because the story reminds me so much of what my grandmother and mother went through, so I crossed my fingers and hoped they would do it justice.
A few weeks ago, thanks to Columbia Pictures Philippines, I had the incredible opportunity to attend an early screening of “It Ends With Us.” They invited my friend Nesa, who asked Bea (Confessions of a Pinay Bookaholic), and me to come along.
While the movie didn’t include every detail from the book, like Lily’s diary entries that introduced the readers to Atlas, it still beautifully captured the heart and soul of the story. I’m thrilled they stayed faithful to the source material and focused intensely on the emotions and pivotal moments, bringing the same intensity and depth as the book.
Blake Lively was amazing. She brought so much raw emotion and authenticity to the role. She portrayed Lily’s complex journey with such grace and power that it was impossible not to be moved. Jenny Slate, who portrayed Alyssa, wasn’t initially the person I had pictured for the role. Still, she managed to bring sincerity and a supportive nature to the character, which complemented the story well.
Justin Baldoni, who directed the film, also took on the challenging role of Ryle. His portrayal was compelling and brought a nuanced understanding of Ryle’s character. He managed to evoke a mix of charm and underlying tension that stayed true to the book’s depiction. Brandon Sklenar, who played Atlas, delivered a heartfelt performance that perfectly captured the quiet strength and unwavering support Atlas provides in Lily’s life.
The film excelled in portraying the book’s core messages about love, resilience, and the courage to break free from toxic cycles. It struck a delicate balance between the romantic and the heart-wrenching moments, making the story feel real and impactful. Justin Baldoni did an exceptional job directing, capturing the book’s spirit while making it visually compelling and emotionally resonant.
Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the book or new to Colleen Hoover’s world, this movie is a must-see. It’s a moving, beautifully crafted film that will stay with you long after the credits roll.
