Vinegar Obsession

If you know me, you know that I don’t really clean around the house. My mom does the cleaning and she does it very well. I can’t seem to do it like she does and she would say “That’s because you don’t do it properly.” A couple of week back, she was attending training everyday and I was left in the house with dogs to look after. I had to clean up after every one, and I had to get rid of the smell, the cleaning agents we buy in the supermarket don’t really work so I googled for DIY home remedies because I know sometimes you don’t need the expensive stuff to get things done. That’s when I discovered the use of vinegar in almost anything.

White distilled vinegar is a popular household cleanser, effective for killing most mold, bacteria, and germs, due to its level of acidity. Cleaning with white distilled vinegar is a smart way to avoid using harsh chemicals. You’ll also be glad to know that it is environmentally friendly and very economical.

I just had to try it out. We have an iMop, similar with Tornado Mop. I put 3 dipper-full of water in it and a dash of white vinegar and used that to mop the tiled floor. At first it looked dull and sticky but after a while, when it dried, it was clean and didn’t smell at all! It’s safe for pets too, the dogs liked the clean floors and they, one by one, lay down and went to sleep.

When mom came home that night, I asked her if the house still smelled, and she said no then asked what I did. So I told her. Apparently she knew about the vinegar but kept forgetting about it.

I observed that there weren’t as many flies as before. Mom said it means the floors are clean and don’t smell that’s why we don’t see the flies. I also noticed that we don’t see ants and roaches anymore.

Vinegar can also be used to clean windows, wood, toilets, etc. It can also be used as a deodorizer and odor neutralizer. I remember mom saying that my bedroom has a smell, something that I’m immune to, so I placed a bowl of vinegar on the top of my dresser and let it sit overnight. The next day, the odor was gone.

Pets can also benefit from the use of vinegar. I found out that spraying or rubbing dogs with a mixture of 1 cup vinegar to 1 quarts of water can give them a gleaming coat. So I made a spray and frequently sprinkle my dogs coats.

You can also prevent dogs from scratching their ears by wiping it regularly with a small towel dipped in undiluted white vinegar.

So far, those are the things I use the vinegar for. Mom was so happy with this vinegar obsession because it is definitely much cheaper than other chemical products and we see the results almost immediately. She bought a liter of it and we’ve been using it everyday.

I use vinegar too in cleaning the house and on white clothes. It’s a very effective stain remover and disinfectant. I remember my grandmother said that it can also be used as feminine wash. You just have to dilute it with water.

No, not yet. Although I’ve read some people add baking soda to their vinegar mix. 😀
